A group of investors took notice in 1926 and spent close to one million dollars to build a totally wooden racetrack equipped with stands to hold 12,000 spectators. The track was later destroyed by a hurricane after only one international race. Even though this event was named "Fulford's Folly", it led to car races at Daytona and Sebring.
Sunny Isles Beach became a popular destination throughout the 50's and 60's once it was purchased by Kurtis Froedtert in 1936, then named Sunny Isles Pier. This half mile-long stretch was named a historical site in 1982 and is still frequented by tourists and fishing enthusiasts. During the slow development of Sunny Isles up to the 1950's, the first line of single family homes were built in Golden Shores. Following these homes, over 30 motels were built along this Collins Avenue location in the 1950's and 60's. The first two-story motel in the United States called Ocean Palm was included among the 30, attracting tourists from everywhere for extended stays at the exotically designed "Motel Row". Currently called the Ocean Palm Resort, it sets quaintly in its original location. Beginning in July of last year, spending for construction purposes increased in the Miami area, and it continued in an upward direct for four month in a row last year in Broward County. As a result, Broward County caught up with Miami-Dade County for real estate-related spending. A lot of this spending is because of an increase in the construction of custom-homes, according to Bernie Navarro of the Latin Builders Association. Notable areas where this is occurring are Key Biscayne, Coral Gables and Pinecrest, locations where building had slowed to a stop. Although some people employed in the construction industry are losing their jobs, the rate at which this is happening appears to be slowing down.
